Biospecimen Bank

What is it?

The Biospecimen Bank is a scheduled collection of blood, cerebrospinal fluid and other body fluids donated by patients for use in ongoing research projects.  The services of the Biospecimen Bank are available to all researchers with an ongoing IRB-approved project. Subject to approval of the application by the STR Committee, the Biospecimen Bank will store biospecimens in connection with the project for the duration of the study.

What do we do?

For each collection, Biospecimen Bank staff will set up an agreed procedure to handle biospecimens in consultation with the researcher. The Biospecimen Bank collects specimens from clinics and wards, processes them (e.g. separation of blood components prior to cryopreservation) and stores them in -80oC freezers.  The Biospecimen Bank consent form has to be used but given the uniqueness of each project, the taking of consent is the responsibility of individual researcher or his collaborating clinician. Each specimen is processed, recorded electronically and the consent forms are filed in accordance with our standard operating procedures (SOP).
