About Us

SingHealth Investigational Medicine Unit (IMU) is a dedicated early phase clinical research unit, which supports the research of commercial partners and independent investigators.

 SingHealth IMU provides services to facilitate:

  • Proof of concept, “first-in-man” or early stage of clinical development of investigational drugs, vaccines and devices
  • Identification and validation of novel disease biomarkers
  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics studies
  • Healthy volunteer trials, supported by a robust database

SingHealth IMU is located at the heart of SGH Campus. Tapping the high patient volume and wide range of medical experience on the Campus, SingHealth IMU is able to conduct cutting-edge studies across the medical spectrum.

 Ready access to a wide range of research services

In addition, SingHealth IMU also has established links with other research services under the SingHealth Group, including:

  • PET, CT and MRI facilities
  • Nuclear medicine services
  • Animal research facilities for pre-clinical work
  • Biobanking services
  • Investigational and chemotherapy pharmacy services
  • A kitchen service, which can provide metabolic diets for feed-controlled studies
  • CAP-certified pathology laboratories

 Part of an academic campus, SingHealth IMU also promotes medical research practice and methodology to train doctors, pharmacists, nurses, coordinators and technologists in clinical trial management.

SingHealth IMU is dedicated to conducting early phase clinical research. Its projects are supported by a team of dedicated Good Clinical Practice (GCP)-trained staff and fully qualified specialist nurses. SingHealth IMU specialises in diseases that impact patients in Asia, including in:

  • Oncology
  • Haematology
  • Cardiology
  • Gastroenterology

At the heart of the largest medical campus

SingHealth IMU:

  • Is located within Singapore General Hospital
  • Is on the same Campus as the national quaternary specialist centres for oncology, cardiovascular, dental, ocular and neurological diseases
  • Has established links and ready access to medical specialists from more than 40 fields

Core Facilities

The 1,324m2 state-of-the-art SingHealth IMU consists of:

  • 7 rooms with 30 licensed hospital beds
  • 3 consultation rooms
  • Dedicated subject recruitment and screening rooms
  • A recreational lounge
  • Monitoring rooms
  • A chronobiology suite with 2 beds, managed by Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore

Services

SingHealth IMU offers tailored services to its research partners, including:

  • Biostatistical support and analysis
  • CRF design
  • Specimen collection, handling and processing
  • Coordination with external central laboratories
  • Project management of trials
  • Preparation for external audit and inspection
  • Conduct of trials adhering to Singapore Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Centralised Institutional Review Board (CIRB) guidelines

SingHealth IMU is fully equipped with:

  • A secured card access system
  • 24/7 CCTV monitoring
  • Synchronised clocks
  • 2-8°C, -30°C and -80°C refrigerators with 24/7 electronic temperature logs linked to a central alarm system
  • Wireless, real-time ECG/telemetry
  • Temperature-controlled centrifuges
  • An in-house electronic data capture
  • (EDC) system
